Mark took his time to understand what we were looking for, what style we wanted, and reviewed samples of similar songs to create an appropriate soundscape for each song. I could hear the architectural layers that he built, while respecting the feel of the original songs.
Mark was very thorough, and worked very hard on getting our songs to sound in ways that we liked them to. He really cared about our project and was committed to doing high quality work.
Rather than taking an advance that most will never pay off, take some money out of your back catalog or prior work and fund your next music project yourself. Or at the very least, hire a good mix producer and do some real mastering of your music.
The mixing process can tighten up a vocal performance, make a piano feel more emotional, make a whole song sound more indie or more pop. These things are achieved using technical and creative psycho-acoustic trickery. Mixing engineers are alchemists. Song colorists. Their trade comes with years of education, practice and talent.
To the industry, an EP is considered a demo but can lead to much more.
A thriving marketplace will exist for artists that are forward-thinking, educated, technologically sophisticated, and that employ good asset management practices.
Mastering is the final creative step to take your mixes to the next level… The unbiased experience of a pro will help you hone your material to a competitive edge.
IF THERE IS ONE TAKEAWAY FROM THIS ARTICLE, IT’S THIS: PAY SOMEONE TO MASTER YOUR MUSIC! (his caps!)
The song has to be recorded in the highest production value possible for the genre…before it can be pitched for use in film and TV.
I have all the tools and gadgets. I tell my son, who’s a producer, ‘You never work for the machine; the machine works for you.’
I’ve known Mark since 1995. His creativity, energy and positive outlook are qualities of distinction. I am honored to have had the pleasure to work alongside such magnificent talent.
Mark always delivered. Even when that meant crazy hours, and impossible requests.
